Taita Cemetery

QUESTION OF CONTROL* DISCUSSED BY LOCAL BODIES The position arising out of. the resignation of the Taita Cemetery Board was referred to at Monday night's meeting of the Lower Hutt City Council, when Cr. H. V. Horlor asked for information. The Mayor said that a joint committee of the Lower Hutt and Petone Councils had discussed the matter, and the committee had been widened to include representatives of Upper Hutt, Eastbourae, and the Hutt County Council. The Hutt County Council did not want control of the cemetery, which was now out of its area, and the Lower Hutt City Council was prepared to take control, with assistance from the other bodies concerned. The financial position was quite good. Cr. Horlor asked w;hether the representatives of the Council on the Cemetery Board had the right ito resign without letting the Council know.

The Mayor said that he thought the resignation should be made to the Council and another appointment made if necessary.

Cr. Giesen said that members of the Board, of which he was chairman, resigned because they had not received the backing of local bodies which they thought they should get. The resignations had been made to the Hutt County Council, the controlling authority, and he had mentioned the matter at a City Council meeting. In reply to a' question, Cr. Giesen said that the Cemetery Board met only about twice a year.

After further discussion it was decided that Crs. Giesen and Horlor be nominated as the Council's representatives on the Board.
