IIUTT OUTPLAYED BY UNIVERSITY With fast wickets and outfields it was expected that high scoring would be the order of the day on Saturday, but except in the second grade fixture, the bowlers generally were on top. The Hutt Senior Eleven found University's 297 far beyond reach, in fact at one stage the students were in a good position to secure an outright win. When play opened the not out batsmen, C. Muir and Frazer carried the score along steadily ta 09 when the partnership was broken. Not one of the remaining batsmeri could stay at the wicket although Dickenson ran into the twenties and Wall, Winyard, Lambert and McLeod all scored double figures. At the tea adjournment eight wickets had fallen for IG4 and the end came shortly after play resumed, the total being 178. Hutt suffered the ignomony of having to follow on, a fate the team has not been familiar with for several seasons.
Again, only one batsman settled down, E. Muir emulating his brother's effort of the first innings? He batted very solidly for 39 before Woolley got through his defence with a sharp off-break, aC ball which gained him several wickets during the afternoon. Once more several of the local batsmen ran into double figures but could not get further.
Hutt scored 155 for 8 wickets before stumps were drawn, leaving Yarsity winners on the first innings.
There appears to be a decided lack of confidence among the Hutt batsmen and it would pay one or two of them to be more courageous and have a real "go" at the bowling.
The Second Eleven found the Kilbirnie team much superior. After dismissing Hutt for the meague total of 90, the Eastern Suburbs' side proceed to hit .the local bowlers to all parts of the field and at stumps had scored 312 for the loss of four wickets.
The Thirds did well to dispose of their opponents for 178 but suffered a collapse in batting and were all out for 60. That this was not the true batting form of the team was shown by the score of 104 for four wickets when they were called upon to bat again.
The Fourth Grade side after losing 9 wickets for 90, saw two school boys defy the bowling for nearly an hour and take the total to 138. This however, proved well within the ability of the Institute—St. Patrick's team which made 194. This perform ance was a commendable one flowever, as the opposition has a good record for the season.
