SOLDIERS' CLUB
A representative meeting of local residents was held lust Friday evening tor the purpose of discussing the possibilities of establishing a social service ciub to provide hospitality for members of the armed forces. The 'meeting was convened by Mrs. J. W. Mackissack and the chair was occupied by Mr. C. 11. Griflin. It was explained that a most commodious home in Woburn Poad hail been offered for tlre purpose on most advantageous terms by one who Ims the welfare of the. boys very much at heart, and it was hoped that a committee of ladies and gentlemen could be formed for the purpose of entertaining members of the forces who would appreciate a club where light meals could be supplied and a l'ow leisure hours could be spent, in congenial surroundings. The proposal was debated I'rom many angles and a provisional committee consisting of Mesdames Mack i.ssack, PothwelJ, Strickland and Messrs Crnnt-Taylor, Rothwell and Louis Harrison, was set up to examine ways and means and to report to a further meeting to be held on Wednesday, September Uud, at 7.::<) p.m., when it is hoped that, any who are interested in the project will attend. i\lr. J. W. Andrews and the lion. Vincent Ward (secretary of the Wellington Provincial and Wellington Metropoli tan Councils), attended and express ed their entire sympathy with the proposal.
