CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The monthly meeting of the executive of the Lower Hutt Chamber of Commerce was held on Wednesday evening. The president, W. C. E. Moran, occupied the chair.

It was agreed that the chamber should be fully: represented at the special service to be

held in the King George ,Theatr§ next Sunday evening.

It was decided to express appreciation to the City Council for its action in erecting cycle stands in the main street, and at the same time urge the ntecessity for further stands to accommodate the great number of cycles lying abouf the footpaths. ' Sympathy was expressed with Mr, P. N. Player and hip tamily in their recent sad bereavement. • POLICE STATION The inadequacy of the present police station accommodation was: expressed ,and a special committee was set up to make inquiries and representations in the proper quarter. DRILL HALL ■'* 1 Surprise was expressed that iA spite of the promise made by the Minister of Defence In November last, no action had been taken for the erection of a Drill Hall in the district. It was decided to write 'tfi: the Minister on the subject. SHOPS AND OFFICES Bllii The secretary reported that the retailers' committee of the chamber had given consideration to the proposed legislation concerning this bill, and made its recommendations to the Lower Hutt City Council. VOIL FUEL COMMITTEE * In response to the request made by the Associated Chambers Commerce, that a representative be appointed. to co-operate with J the Employees' and Manufacturers' A&-* sociation on the Local Oil Fuel Committer, it was decided to approve ihe nomination of Mi 1 . J. E. Salmon. of Exide Batteries Ltd., to the position. BROKEN GLASS ON STREETS It was decided to draw the attenof the City Council to the growing nuisance caused by broken glass being left on the streets as the result of accidents, also broken bottles were frequently found on tfte road. This presented a real danger to motorists. NEW , POSTMASTER. Mr. Hi Y. Ward, the recentlyappointed postmaster, was welcomed by the chairman. In reply, Mr. Ward said he hoped to co-operate with the chamber in matters pf mutual interest to the best of fits ability.
