Rugby Notes

Fixtures for this week are Senior y. Marist, Hutt Recreation Ground; Fourth A v. Miramar; Fourth B v. Athletic; Fifths v. Miramar; and Sixths, v. Eastbourne. The ,groundß for these lower grade fixtures will most probably be the same as those fixed when the games were postponed on the 23rd August. . Matches for 4 the Juniors 'and, thirds have"' been tentatively arranged against Petone. Some playera from these teams will, however, lie required .to fill gaps in the Senior team.

The Fifth** journeyed to Masterton on Saturday last, where they had a tooat enjoyable time, and succeeded in beating the Masterton team 1J2 —8. The return match will be plhyed on September 13th.

The Fourth B's expect to visit Palmerston this week-end to play a match againßt Palmerston Old Boys. Should this match eventuate on the date expected, the B's will have to forfeit their match against Athletic, thus spoiling a very good record, as they are unbeaten to date.

Wing Commander G. T, J&rman, an ex-member of the club, is again in the news, having beed awarded the D.S.O. The recipient now holds the D.F.C. and D.SO. We extend our sincere congratulations to this airman's wife and parents, who reside in Lower Hutt.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ® TOURNEY AT HUTT DANNEVIRKE'S NARROW WIN Scoring under the posts and converting the try a few minutes before full-time, Dannevirke School beat Hutt Valley High School 5 —3 in the final of the quadrangular tournament played on the Hutt Valley High School ground on Monday of last week. Wairarapa College beat Scots College in the other match.

Dannevirke fielded one of the heaviest secondary school teams seen for some time, the pack averaging over 12 stone, two of the forwards being 15st and 14st 101b respectively. The lighter Hutt Valley team adopted bustling tactics for the major part to offset their opponents' control of the scrums, and proved so successful that they almost emerged victors. There was no score at the interval. Early in the second spejl Hathaway, the Hutt half, initiated a neat blind side movement, the ball going to Green, to Horrobin, who scored wide out. The kick missed. Dannevirke had the better of the remainder of the spell, but encountered dour defence. Eventually Moore, at centre three-quarter, who has represented Hawke's Bay this season, after a number of unsuccessful efforts, managed to penetrate the defence to score under the posts three minutes before time. He converted the try to give Dannevirke an exciting win.
