Annual Meeting

HUTT DISTRICT CRICKET QLUB

The thirty-second of the Hutt District Cricket Club, which was adopted at thq, annual meeting held on the 25th Aufpst, stated that the p&st season Was|tS<e modt successful in the history of the ,club. Before taking the business of, the meeting, members stood in silence In memory of the late Mr. £. P. Bunny, and feeling reference was made to the which he was held during association with the Club. .<* i The meeting confirmed the following notice of motion to the Wellington Cricket Association. "This Club favours and recommends one-day cricket for the ensuing season for al} teams under the jurisdiction of the Wellington Cricket Association." The following officers were elected: — President, Sir Alex. Roberts; 'vicepresidents, all re-elected with the addition of Messrs. H. S. Dudding and J. Mitchell; Club Capt., Mr. E. A. Gillies; deputy capt., Mr. R. Mustard; hon. secretary, Mr. 0. Turner; hon. treasurer, Mr. B. T. Peglar; hon. auditor, Mr/ A. D. Davies; recorders, Messrs 0. Murray, J. Liver, W. N. Grant and R. Deal.

In recognition of his long services to the Club Mr. B. T. Peglar was elected a life member. Continuing, the report stated that, while a certain amount of difficulty was experienced in maintaining five teams, it was not necessary to default any of the games, although on one or wo occasions lower grade teams fielded Bhort. The fact that the club is a district one gives it a distinct advantage over town clubs, as its membership is fairly constant, and at least ha|f its members are married men. Of; those for service overseas or as Territorials, the club can present a splendid record. Over 30

per*cent, of the membership for the

1939-40 season have enlisted in one "of" the branches of the armed services or have been in training with Territorial units.

F icellent weather conditions throughout the season afforded players plenty of cricket, and only one Saturday was lost through wet weather. It is pleasing to note that attendances at matches were very good, and the interest of the public

increased as the season progressed

This was no doubt due to the! ocit- . , / !ng finishes in several, of \games.

The attendances at practice during the season were not up to expectations, but the present unsettled conditions no doubt had a lot to do with this. An encouraging feature was the regular attendance' of the younger members. Club Championships The Glub this season occupied second place in the Club championship and was credited with 795 points, a record which) will probably stand for Bome time, especially as these points were gained by only five teams. Coaching This season the Club did not have the services of a Wellington Cricket Association's coach, but it was pleasing to see one or two senior members of the Club assisting the younger members in the finer points of the game. It is to be hoped that next season more members, especially of the Senior team, will give a little of their time to the coaching of the younger players. Several young members of the Club have shown that they are full of cricket and should develop quickly If they are taken in hand by one . of the experienced players, and given further coaching. It is to be hoped that some arrangements can be made to see that they receive coaching regularly. Teams Five teams from our Club were entered in the Wellington Cricket Association's competitions:—Senior, Second, Fourth, Fifth and Seventh. Three of the five teams won their grade championship, namely, Fourth Fifth and Seventh. The Senior team gained second place, while the Seconds occupied sixth place. Social

The social committee again did valuable, work, and was responsible for augmenting the Club funds to ~'ihe extent of approximately £26. Sunday games were played against Empire, Silverstfeam College and the Management Committee of the Hutt Valley Association, and all proved moat enjoyable. For many years the Committee has endeavoured to make a success of a club dinner at the end of the season, but their efforts have met a miserable response from * members. As a departure-last season, a Club Day, followed by an informal tea, was organised, and this proved an outstanding success. * Some 60 members, vice-presidents v and. friends attended, and the happy atmosphere which was in evidence was* ample recompense for the effort 'Which the SOdrfl Cdmmittee had pat Into the arrangements. ' Trophies \ I f Tile Adit Cup, which is presented - to the|w«Fer who retuimrf thfe' Woat ~ ■. during the ' ...ftfmon,■ -this' year, awarded to A The particular per-

formance was recorded in the match against Kilbirnie—a" game that was virtually a final, and by taking six wickets for 19 runs off 15 overs, paved the way for a win over this team, and enabled the Fourth Grade side to win their grade championship.

The Fairburn Shield, awarded to the 1 team gaining the most number of points for the Club Championship, was again won by the Fifth (Social) Grade team. Representative Honours Congratulations were extended to E. McLeod, who captained the Wellington representative team against Auckland. Team Performances. Senior Team: Played 10, won 5, drawn 2, lost championship points 41. The senior side, while disappointing its supporters on occasions, did really well, and finished up the season in second place to Kilbirnie. Second Grade: Played 10, won 5, drawn 1, lost 4; championship points 41. This team did not perform as well as in other seasons, but this was in some ways due to the fact that so many changes occurred during the year.

Fourth Grade: Played 9, won 6, drawn 2, lost 1; championship points 53. This team, under the able captaincy of M. Orr, developed into a strong side, and they succeeded in winning their grade championship. This success was due to consistent batting, excellent bowling and keenness in the field.

Fifth Grade: Played 10, won 10; championship points 71. This team' proved much too strong for the opposition in this grade (some of the matches being won outright in one day), and won their grade championship fairly easily.

Seventh Grade: Played 16, won 14, lost 2; championship points 88. This team also won their grade championship, and although at times the side played one -or two players short, they gave a good account of themselves. Finance. Notwlthstandging the falling off in the. membership owing to the departure of members on military service, and a consequent reduction in the amount collected for subscriptions and ground fees, the financial position of the club is spupd.
