HUTT SHINGLE

HEAVY DEMAND The Hutt-Petone Shingle Company applied to the Hutt River Board at its last meeting for tSe right to take shingle from the river bed at Barnes's property in the Taita Gorge. The board replied that the beach at Barnes's was already under offer to another firm, but there was another beach higher up at Routley's over which the board was prepared to give the right to remove shingle. The board refused to entertain a request for a reduction in the royalty...

The secretary (Mr. A. J. Gearing) reported that almost tfye whole of the shingle supplies for, the Wellington district came from the Hutt River. The demand was so great that discarded boulders were now being crushed to supply the demand.
