Erosion Complaint
The chairman of the Hutt River Board, Dr. B.'J. Dudley, reported at last week's meeting of the board that members and the engineer, Mr. H. Sladden, had interviewed Mr. Routley regarding his complaint that the board was not doing anything to protect his land in the Taita Gorge from erosion. Mr. Sladden had expfained to Mr. Routley that a groyne which was advocated would have the effect of throwing the current violently against the opposite bank, from where would rebouna suarply to strike Mr. Routley's land lower down. The engineer had also stated that though there might, in the immediate future, be some further erosion, ultimately the land would "make up," and Mr. Ro-utley would have an increased area. The board had suggested that if Mr. Routley was not satisfied the board would be prepared to consider the purchase of the endangered land. It was decided to confirm to Mr. Routley, in writing, the results of the interview.
