"LYON" MEDAL CONTEST
HUTT DEBATING, SOCIETY'S WIN. At the conclusion of the debating season, the Wellington Union of Public Speaking Societies hold a contest for the Lyon Medal. This gold medal is presented annually,by Mr. W. J. Lyon, M.P., for competition among the twelve affiliated Public Speaking and Debating Societies of the Union. The award is for a speech or oration on any subject. When the contest was inaugurated three years ago, the Hutt Debating Society was successful, Mr. J. R. Scott receiving the reward. This year another of the Hutt club's members, Mr. E. T. Giddens, was awarded the medal by the adjudicator, Mr. W. P. Rollings. Owing to the unsettled conditions, entries were as numerous as previously.- The subjects chosen by the speakers varied from "Marshal Gamelin" to "The value of human life." The winniyg speech dealt with "Democracy."
