DASTARDY ATTEMPTED MURDER.
At tho Goulbourn police court (Victoria) a German named George Eugene Kothe was charged with attempting to murder his mate, a man named Gottwald, on the Sydney road. Gottwald is in the hospital with a severe wornd on tho head and other injuries; but his condition is not dangerous. His story is that he left Camdon eight days ago with Kothe to go gold-mining, Kothe knowing that ho had money. One night he was lying awake in bed when Kothe, it is alleged, came behind and hit him several times on tho head with a bar of iron. Gottwald, who is a strong man, closed with his assailant and secured him. During tho struggle his foot was burned in tho fire. Gottwald had dug a big hole, and he avers that it was Kothe's intention to throw him into it, when he would not havo been beard of again. Six sovereigns and two watches were kept by Gottwald under the head of his bed. Kothe says he only acted in self-defence.
