A LIVELY SCENE IN A CHINESE GAMBLING DEN.
Eedfcrn (Sydney) polico mado a raid a fow nights ago on two Chinese gambling dens, situated in Botreat street, Waterloo, where fantan was being carried on. A Chinaman, who happened to bo standing at the door of an adjoining house, seeing tho police approaching, raised the alarm, with tho result that a scatter of the Chinamen took placo in all directions. Every available hiding-place was utilised. In one instanoo the chimney was used as a hilding-place, the fugitive having to bo dragged down tho chimney bj' tho feet. In another instance a man locked himself in an outhouse, and in order to secure him tb.o police were obliged to force in tho
front wall of the building an<l take tho man from among tho debris. Some of the more desperate ones attempted to defy the police by fightina but were overcome and secured. In all 3fi Chinamen were arrested, including tho banker and croupier in each house. The whole of the paraphernalia used iu tho game of fantan and about £C in silver found on the tables were secured.
