SAND-PIT SERVICE.
An article in Transport Efficiency describes a day’s test of a Morris Commercial 3-4 ton "Leader” tipping lorry in a large Surrey sand-pit, and demonstrates convincingly the suitability of this product for such arduous work. The testers, after finding an old 1931 Morris Commercial among the trucks regularly operating there, took the "Leader” over a roughly formed track towards the pit face, where the shovel was at work. During the morning this surface Avas tra\ r ersed 50 times in either , direction, both empty and with four tons aboard. The suspension proved easily adequate for this task, as did the progressive rear springs, which had to withstand heavy impacts every time the loads were dropped in. The 4-ton loads were emptied into the conveyor each time in 29 seconds, no hand shovelling being necessary to remove residue. At the end of the first test, 200 tons of sand had been handled in five hours.
Later, an ascent was made to the upper level of the pit face, practically inaccessible to ordinary trucks, the Morris Commercial successfully negotiating the 1 in 5 slope over planks set across the sandy track. At the end of the day, a petrol consumption test was held on the surrounding hills, carrying a 4-ton load, and one gallon lasted for 111 miles, without coasting.
