A SIMPLE PRECAUTION.

Before the cap of the oil-filling orifice on the gearbox or rear axle is unscrewed, or even loosened, it is a wise precaution to wipe off the oily dirt that will be on and about the cap and filler, if these have not been disturbed for some time. Although it is unlikely that this abrasive compound will otherwise fa-ll into the filling orifice as the cap is being lifted away, it may do so; the suggestion that it should be cleared away before the cap is unscrewed is to prevent the di*t from getting on to the threads and under the joint washer during the process of removal, for if this should occur there may be difficulty later on in screwing the cap down tightly, resulting in oil leakage subsequently. By all means clean the cap, the washer and the toj) of the filling orifice again, after removal of the cap, but get the dirt away from the outside of .these items as a preliminary in any

case. This advice applies also to the drainplug of the gear-box-rear axle or engine. When the union nut of an oil pipe, or the oil gauge pipe, or any such nut on a small pipe—e.g. on the petrol feed —is to be unscrewed or tightened, make sure in using the spanner on it that the pipe itself is not tivisted, corksereAV fashion, instead of the nut unscrewing or being tightened. If the nut proves to be stubborn (difficult to unscrew or tighten), the curved and serrated jaws of a pair of pliers should be applied to the sleeve of the union to prevent it from turning. The sleeim itself mar be broken away from the pipe, as well as, or instead of, the pipe being twisted, if some such precaution is not taken.
