MAYOR’S RELIEF COMMITTEE.

USEFUL WOEK DOME. A meeting of the Mayor’s Relief Fund Committee was held on Monday afternoon. Present: The Mayor (Mr Butt) in the chair, and Mesdames Bovis, Mason, Blaikie and Snelling and Messrs Anderson, Hyde, Semple and Bovis (secretary). The secretary reported that the fund stood at £2B 2s, and it was anticipated that a further sum of about £5 would be made available shortly, being the fulfilment of promises made. Ihe amount in hand included donations from the Church of England £4 13s, Mangaore Social Club £2 l'ss. Girls * Club £2 Bs, Girl Guides 10s, Misses M. and M. Baxter ss. It was also likely that Shannon would be allotted a sum by the Minister of Unemployment from the proceeds of the recent big art union. At the moment, accounts to be passed for payment would reduce the sum in hand to £5 9e 2d. The District Nurse had forwarded a further supply of clothing. Mr Young had sent in about 401bs of honey and Mrs Pigott a large quantity of soap. Mrs Bovis reported on the activities of the ladies’ committee and said there was a need for more children’s clothes. They had distributed, new and secondhand clothing, to sixteen families, and it had been appreciated. It was difficult to fill every need, but Mesdames Mason, Blaikie and Snelling had given great assistance and thanks were due to them for their help and assistance. Goods had been purchased with, a view to quality and price and the committee desired to thank Messrs Clayton and Hyde for the liberal discounts allowed.

The following list of new and second hand goods had been given out, said Mrs Bovis and gave some idea of what was being done: New Goods. — 5% yards unbleached sheeting, 25 yards winceyette, 21bs kapoc made into cot and bed mattress for children, I skirt length of heavy tweed, 3 yards bloomer cloth, 1 pair women’s wool blomniers, 1 pair bloomers, 2 pair bloomers girls, 6 girls singlets, 10 boys’ singlets, 5 pairs boys’ grey shorts, 4 grey shirts (boys), 6 pairs boys’ hose, 3 boys’ grey jerseys, 2 pairs wool hose, 12 pairs boys boots, 2 pairs children’s shoes, 7 pairs girls’ shoes, 4 pairs girl’s hose. Second-hand goods.—B pairs bloomers, 9 singlets, 3 perseys (2 girls), 1 cardigan, 3 overcoats (1 boy’s), '4 pairs women’s hose, 1 man’s coat, 4 pairs underpants, 1 tunic, 2 pairs boys’ pyjamas, 2 girls’ shirt, 7 girls’ frocks, 1 cap, 1 pair sandals, 1 double bed cover, 2 pairs men’s pants, 2 flannels, 2 petticoats, 2 pairs shoes, 1 boy’s overcoat. Parcel of goods to Plunket Nurse for distribution, parcel of second-hand goods to Maori Pa. Mr Hyde said he felt sure that the work of distributing the goods and spending the money available could not be in better hands and moved a vote.of thanks to the ladies for their good work. This was seconded by Mr Anderson and carried unanimously. It was decided that the honey and soap be handed to the Belief Workers’ Association for distribution and that the ladjes be empowered to spend the money in hand to the best advantage for the relief of distress.

A woman's dressing gown was sent to the Palmerston North Hospital for the use of patients.

The committee desire to thank all who have contributed clothing and given financial assistance. Accounts totalling £l2i2 13s 4d were passed for payment.
