WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.

SHANNON’S MONTHLY MEETING. 'The meeting room at the June meeting of the Shannon Women’s Institute presented a very gay scene, one wall being almost covered with sugar-bag cushion covers gayly enbroidered in coloured wools. The display, which was indeed beautiful, was the entry for the Manawhenua Group Banner, and one feels that- ‘’‘voting for the best” is just as difficult a problem as was the singling out a ‘‘best” in the recent flour-bag competition. The humble sugar-bag was quite unrecognisable, the standard of design and embroidery being very high. 'Considerable business was dealt with. A husbands’’ evening to take the form of ‘ ‘ 500 ’ ’ and euchre, was arranged for Monday, July 3rd, and members were reminded of the next Group Rally at Tokomaru, on Wednesday, July sth. Two new members, Mrs Shaw and Mrs MeMeakin, were elected. Voting on the day’s competition for something new from something old”, resulted Mrs Nicol 1, Mrs Tremewan 2, Mrs M. Satherley 3. After a dainty afternoon tea, served by Mesdames F. Wilson, Pallant, tPettitt, and Coley, the Rev. A. Fotheringham kept members intensely interested for nearly an hour while he told them of life and eondi-

tions in Central (Africa. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker and all present decided that “God’s Own Country” was not such a bad place after all. Next month demonstrations of pine needle work and plain raffia work will be given and the competition is for six biscuits all of one kind and eggless. The National Anthem closed an enijoyable afternoon.

Mrs Brann was the winner of the trophy at the Tuesday afternoon euchre run under the auspices of the Women’s Institute. Mesdames Tremewan and Terry were hostesses.
