Another Attempt to Conquer Everest
EXPEDITION NEXT YEAR British Official Wireless. Received Monday, 7.30 p.m. RUGBY, Sept. 4. Another attempt to conquer Mount Everest will be made by British climbers next year. This announcement is made in a letter from the Royal Geographical Society. It is signed by Ad miral Sir William Goodenough, president of the Royal. Geographical Society, and Brigadier-General Bruce, who was the leader of the 1924 expedition. General Bruce hopes that by the beginning Of May the expedition w r ill be well up the mountain. The attempt to climb Everest began with a reconnaissance expedition in 1921, followed in 1922, 1924 and 19_o by further ventures, but up to the present the mountain has proved unconquerable. It was in 1924 that G. L-. Mallory and A. C. Irvine lost their lives in the attempt to conquer the last 1000 feet of the ascent. It was estab. lished beyond doubt tuat they had reached 28,000 feet, but the manner ol their death could only bo conjectured.
