CYCLE ROAD RACING.

OTAKI CLUB’S EVENT. TO WAIKANAE AND BACK. There were no less than fifteen starters in the road race on Saturday when the course was from Otaki Railway to the Waikanae Railway station and back. The riders encountered a strong head wind on the downward journey and times were, in consequence, slow but once on the homeward run the pace was a merry one and all riders - put up fast times. The entrants were: Min. F. Love 13} R. Flutey 13} ' T. Dickson 10 L. Wylie 10 W. Perryman 7 F. Mudgway 7 T. Mudgway 7 L. Coulter 7 F. Butt 7 C. Garrett ’’ g* S. Thomson 5 S. Pretty 5 B. Coulter ’* 3^ K. Miles ’ * 31 P. McLeod 3 Miles encountered trouble * just after leaving end returned for adjustment to his cycle. He then went in pursuit, but was the last to leave.. B. Coulter nvas thus left a lone-hander. On the *way down the back-markers gained but little till half-way was reached. Thomson and Pretty were 300 yards behind Garrett, a lone-hander, by the time Te Horo was sighted, while Tub Mudgway had a break on Garrett of - 500 yards. Mudgway at this stage was pedalling in good style, making every endeavour to overhaul Coulter, Butts, I l ’, Mudgway, and Perryman. Xu front of this bunch Wylie and Dickson were ahead by 300 yards, while 200 yards further ahead were Love and Plutey, but the former was showing signs of distress. At Derham’s the limit men were only doing 15 m.p.h. Passing this spot Wylie and Dickson caught Love and Plutey, and the speed, which was for a time only 10 m.p.h., increased to 15. A stretch of downhill was welcomed and with the flaxmill in sight the four were going well, but Love dropping behind, the pace being too hot. Some 300 yards to the rear were L. Coulter, Butt, T. Mudgway, aiid Perryman, all going strongly. Despite the strong wind 15 m.p.h. was maintained. Garrett was well behind, still alone. At Fraser’s crossing the •pace was increased, and Love was being left. With a bunch of seven turns were taken to make the pace and the down hill stretch prior to Waikanae being reached saw the riders going great guns. The pace was too hot for Love and Wylie and the pair cried enough. The other six maintained a good pace, while a little later Wylie made a renewed attempt to catch up. The first men to turn at Waikanae were Coulter, Perryman, F. Mudgway, Butt, Dickson, and Flutey. Waikanae was reached by the bunch two minutes to thre-3. Flutey, on rounding the umpire (Mr. L. Kilmister) fell, but quickly re-mounted. Wylie and T. Mudgway were 1} minutes behind the leaders, three minutes later eame Garrett, while witliin 100 yards followed B. Coulter, Pretty, and Thomson. Two minutes later McLeod turned, and .sixty seconds later Miles, Within a minute after 3 p.m. all were on the homeward run and with the strong back wind the pace was a cracker, t and record times must have been established. Thirty to forty miles an hour was a common sight among the riders. Pretty lead McLeod and Miles for a time, while ahead I were B. Coulter, Thomson, and Garrett. Then Butts was sighted, 150 yards to the o-ood, with T. Mudgway leading hum by 30 yards. Flutey had an advantage of 120* yards on Mudgway who reached the overhead bride at 3.15. L. "Coulter, .going well was in advance by 150 yards, while Dickson and Perryman had a break on this rider when nearing the traffic bridge. Despite their efforts they failed to overhaul T. Mudgway, a game rider, who won by the best part of 100 yards. Then came Perryman, \/ho rode well throughout, followed by Dickson, who, had he started from his proper mark, would have .gained fastest time, then L. Coulter, who is showing good improvement in his riding. R- Flutey •battled on and rode into fifth place, followed by T. Mudgway, 100 yards to the rear. Then came Butt, later Thomson, while after a considerable p-ap Pretty and Garrett together, later McLeod, who did the return journey in 21 minutes. Miles was last. Fastest time, 54min 49sec., went to F. Mudgway, with R. Perryman a good second.
