TAILORS’ DISPUTE BEFORE THE COUNCIL.
A HALF-CROWN OBSTACLE,
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday.
The Conciliation Council, which is considering the Wellington tailoring dispute, resumed its sitting to-day. The workers’ representatives said that a meeting of the union had directed him to press for £4 15s a week for tailors, and £4 10s for pressers, less 10 per cent, in both cases. The employers’ agent, Mr Mount joy, said that the demand was “a bit over the edge.” It could not be argued that a tailor was any more skilled than other tradesmen. The employers were prepared to offer £4 10s and £4 ss, less 10 per cent. After a retirement, the workers rejected this offer, but agreed to accept £4 12s 6d and £4 7s fid. This proposal wa s rejected by the employers, and the Council adjourned till this afternoon, to enable the parties to further consider >fhe matter.
