AGAINST TOLLS ON HIGHWAYS
RESOLUTION BY MOTOR UNIONS. PROPOSED PAREMATA BRIDGE MENTIONED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Tuesday. The attitude of motorists towards the reinstitution of toll-gates in New Zealand, as an outcome of the pressure that is being exerted for a toll bridge at Paremata, near Porirua, was discussed at the. Motor Union’s conference. A delegate from the Wellington club, Mr E. A. Batt, said that a broader outlook was involved ■ than mere' district gain. -No cross-current should be allowed to interfere with the operation of the Highways Act. A return to the conditions of 25 years ago would not be tolerated. A resolution was carried that the North and South Island Unions are opposed to the reintroduction of toll gaes.
