BURGLAR WITH CHLOROFORM EQUIPMENT.

PATEA BANK SENSATION. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) WANGANUI, Tuaday. The young man Alfred Jeffrey, who was arrested in Patea, having been found under the bed of the manager of the branch of the Bank of New Zealand, was before the Court here this morning, charged that on August 2nd he broke and entered by night the shop of E. Goldsburg, chemist, and stole £3 14s from the till and a bottle of chloroform and some cotton wool. He was remanded to appear on Monday next.

Arrested at the revolver point in the Patea branch of the Bank of New Zealand at 10,45 on Saturday night, Albert Jeffrey, aged 24, was charged at the Patea Court yesterday with breaking and entering, with intent to commit theft. Accused was remanded till September 14th. When the manager, Mr A. C. Thompson, went to his bedroom on Saturday night he heard suspicious sounds, so he quietly took a revolver from a drawer. A man then dived from beneath ■the bed and rushed downstairs, but was confronted by locked doors. Eventually he took refuge in the boot cupboard, where he was located and locked up by the manager pending the arrival of the police. When searched at the police station the man was found to be in possession of a pad of cotton-wool soaked in chloroform. He had a threeounce bottle partly filled with chloroform, and a length of stout cord. In a bag a novel entitled “The Cat Burglar;” a diamond glass-cutter, and a packet of .22 revolver bullets, but no •firearm.
