Miss England lIL Strikes Trouble POOR SHOWING IN BAD WEATHER Received Sunday, 9.0 p.m. DETROIT (Michigan), Sept. 3. Gar Wood won the first Harmsworth trophy race. The start was delayed half an hour through rain. Kaye' Don got away to lead and held the advantage for over half the distance. Then Wood pulled up and took the victory. Poor weather prevented fast time. . Don lead for the first twenty-eight miles, then Wood, trailing a mile and a half behind, opened up, crossing the finish almost two miles ahead of the Britisher who seemed in difficulty. A hundred thousand spectators seemed stunned as Wood swept over the finish line. Despite. Wood’s victory Don turned up the fastest lap, circling the course the first time at a speed of 88.685 statute miles per hour, while Wood’s best was 87.387. The average speed over the full course was Wood 79,489 and Don 71.265. The counae was the most unsatisfactory in recent years, heavy rain and high winds creating nasty seas. The second race will be held on Monday. Wood’s time for the course was announced as -30 min 48.72 secs, and Don’s 33min. so.92secs. After the race Kaye Don announced: "We lost a lot of speed at the end-of the third lap and began taking water. Ho>v it got there I don’t know. That is what we will have to find out today. It was a fine course and I could see clearly.” Gar Wood stated: "We rhn the race just as we planned and didn’t have the boat wide open at any time.”

Only One Engine Working Received Sunday, 10.30 p.m. DETROIT, Sept. 3. Kaye Don, after the race, issued a statement saying: “This was the greatest race in which I have ever driven. I enjoyed it immensely. The conditions were such that they made it somewhat difficult for the competitors. “Unfortunately during the third lap we developed two troubles. First the throttle control at the carburettor on the. starboard engine became detached and only the port engine was working after the third lap. Second, the overflow pipe for the water circulation of the engine pulled out and shipped ' water into the boat instead of overboard, * “I do want to offer my sincerest congratulations to Gar Wood on his magnificent victory. I am looking forward with enthusiasm to the race on Monday. ' r
