Serious Potato Slump in Canterbury

SHARP ADVANCE IN FOWL WHEAT CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. There has been a serious weakening in the potato market. The quotation to-day prompt is 70s to 72s 6d f.o.b. at The quotation for Julyber delivery is 77s 6d to 80s f.o.b. Today a sale was made at 50s on trucks prompt delivery. Shipments to the North Island have not been large. The price for fowl wheat has advanced sharply, demand being in excess of supply. Quotation for prompt delivery is 5s 3d f.0.b., May delivery 5s 4d. It is difficult to secure a quotation for spread delivery. The market for milling wheat is firm. Tuscan is quoted at 5s 3d to 5s 4d a bushel on trucks. The oats market is dead, A Gartons being nominally 2s f.o.b. and B’s 2s 9d; spread delivery South Island ports, A’s 2s lOd, Chaff is worth £2 15s a ton on trucks free. Linceed is worth £9 to £9 10s a ton on trucks which is much below the price being paid to contract growers this season.
