Before proceeding with the business at the Horowhenua Electric Power Board’s monthly meeting yesterday, the Chairman (Mr G. A. Monk) referred to the bereavement sustained by Mr W. Barber, one of the Board’s members, in the death of his mother; and a vote of sympathy to the family was passed in silence.
The death occurred at his residence, Lyall Bay, Wellington, yesterday, of Mr Philip L. Hollings, barrister, who was for some time in practice in Levin and Foxton and who contested the Manawatu seat in the Liberal interest at the 1925 election:- He was a Londoner by birth, and by his own efforts became a lawyer of high standing in New Zealand, having a business for many years in Masterton, of which town he became Mayor. While there, he married a daughter of the late Mr W. C. Perry, and brought up a large family. His practice was a very wide one, and the best legal brains of the Wairarapa district were represented when he and the late Charlie Pownall were pitted together in the days of the old District Court. Eventually he was appointed a Magistrate, and sat at Wellington, Blenheim and .Wanganui. The deceased was aged 59.
