PAYMENTS GRATIFYING IN VIEW OF THE TIMES. £579 SUBJECT TO PENALTY. In view of the fact that Monday, February Kith, was the last day for the payment of Levin Borough rates without the addition of the statutory ten per cent, penalty, it may be of interest to give a few figures incidental to the collection of rates for the current year:— Arrears: The arrears of rates outstanding at April Ist last amounted to £71(1 Ids Id. To date, these have been reduced to £413 15s 3d, by collections amounting to £303 Os lid. In addition, penalties collected have been £3O 17s.
Current: The total rates collectible for the current year are £7143 5s 3d. The collections have been £GSG4 2s lOd, the balance of £579 2s* 5d being subject to penalty. The proportion coliected_ is thus 91,89 per cent., as compared with 93.GG per cent, at the same date last vear and 93.53 pfir cent, in 1929.
The manner in which the rates had come in this year, considering the depression, was described by the Mayor (Mr C. Blcnkhorn), at the Council’s last meeting, as very gratifying.
