WORLD'S RECORD FOR 800 METRES.

An 800 metres race was won by Lowe in 1 mill. 51 1-5 sec,, by four metres, establishing a world's record. Peltzer, 1 miu. 52 1-5 sec. was second. Bocher (Germany), lmin. 53 9-10 sec, was third. At the Olympic Games, the British athlete, D. G. Lowe, won the final of the 800 metres flat race in the Olympic record time of 1 min 51 4-5 sec. OLYMPIAD A STERN TEST. (Times Cable). (Received This Day, 10.0 a.m.) LONDON, August 19. "Olympiader," writing in The Times, summing up the Empire's performances at the Olympic Games, says: "Winter's and Lay's failures remind tis, as track failures must remind the Americans, that too much reliance placed on previous performances in perhaps highly favourable conditions ■can be a snare and delusion in estimating the national chances at any •Olympiad,." Lay, the New Zealander (who had put up a world's record of 222 ft 9in. in the javelin throw at Stamford Bridge, only'covered 206 feet in his heat at the Olympiad, and did not qualify for the final. In the'hop, step and jump, Winter (Australia). the record-holder, failed to qualify, the ground being too soft' for him. He covered 46ft sin., *iut failed" to reproduce the form that he showed when he won the British championship. _______
