VETERAN RUGBY SKIPPER INJURED.
HARRY JACOB A*HOSPITAL CASE. The closing of the season in Levin on Saturday saw the veteran Manawhenua captain and All Black, Harry Jacob, received injuries of a nature serious enough to warrant his removal to the Palmerston North Hospital, where he was operated upon at an early hour yesterday morning. ,He was participating in the final of the knock-out competition on the Domain, Wanderers v. Shannon, for the Nash Cup, when he fell on the eloow of Payne, receiving internal injuries : which./ultimately brought him to the operating theatre.. The incident happened early in the game, but-Jacob persisted in seeing the game out, and although he was unable to do much actual play, he was invaluable as a general. 'When-he was examined by .Dr. Thompson subsequently he was.informed that he was a hospital case, but he held out until 9 p.m., and then collapsed in his home. The doctor again advised his removal, but it was not until nearly 4 a.m. on Sunday morning that Jacob gave in and left for Palmerston North. He was operated on imiriediately on his arrival at six o'clock, and was, later reported to be doing fairly well, although the injury (an internal rupture) is considered to be of rather a serious nature. All the friends and admirers of one of N>w Zealand's finest footballers will wish Skipper Jacob a speedy recovery. Inquiry was made from the hospital staff by telephone this afternoon and it was learned that the patient's condition had slightly improved, but he was still seriously ill.
