CHORAL RECITAL TO-NIGHT

OPERETTA AND CONCERT.

The final rehearsal of the operetta "A Tale of Old Japan," oy the Levin Choral Society, together with the principals and orchestra, takes place this afternoon, and the piece will be produced in the first half of the programme at to-night's 'recital in the De Luxe Theatre. The soloists are: Soprano, Miss Naomi Whalley (Palmerston N.); contralto, Miss Madge Freeman (Wel.lington); tenor, Mr Edgar Swain (Wellington); baritone, Mr J. D. Brown (Levin). The orchestra will oe assisted by several members of ihe Eoyal Wellington Choral Union; Mr J. W. Hayfield will be at the organ, and Miss Thelma Shaw, F.T.C.L., at the piano. The work is an attractive one, and the choir are expected to give an excellent rendering of it. An admirably arranged concert will form the second par}; of the programme. Miss Whalley will be heard in the "Waltz Song" from. "Tom Jones"; and Miss Whalley and Mr Edwin Dennis, A.E.C.M. (conductor of the Society) in the "Miserere" scene from "II Trovatore." Miss Freeman will sing "Softly Awakes My Heart" (Saint Saens); Mr Edgar Swain, "Che Gelida Manini," from "La Boheme"; and Mr J. D. Brown, "Pagan" (Hermann Lohr). There will be part-songs both by male and female voices. The ladies of the Society will contribute "Oars are Plashing Lightly" and "Ghosts of Little White Eoses"; and the gentlemen will render the ever-popular us, ''Comrades in Arms. In the "Soldiers Chorus" from "Faust" the full strength of the Society will be utilised. The performance will open with the National Anthem in Sir Edward Elgar's setting, Miss Whalley taking the solo part. A well-filled house is anticipated; and those who have not booked seats, will be advised to seek admission early.
