PETROL TAX THE FAIREST.
PRIME MINISTERS VJEW. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 16. In, regard to the heavy traffic bylaws, there is uo chance of the principle being altered. The amount oi capital expended on roads is, such that it makes it imperative for the Government to take a definite stand. Such was the statement made by Mr Coates, in replying to a deputation from the mail contractors, which waited on him to-day in reference to motor taxation. ; Tlie deputation submitted that if a tire tax were based on weight and not on price it would provide an even income. Mr Coates said he disagreed with that view. It was not a sound tax. A petrol tax was the soundest and the only one that correctly recorded speed, weight <and distance. He would not say tlie present system
was perfect. lie wanted to get all the information available and thojugnt they would have to modify taxes in future. At present they were feeling their way. In the end he had no doubt but that they would be able to get a good system..
