GAOL FOR INDECENCY
For committing an indecent act in a public place, in Warren street, on November 7 and October 23, James Matthews appeared in the Hastings Magistrate ’s Court, and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Detective B. Farquharson said that a woman and a child were about at the time of the offence.
For the accused Mr W. E. Averill said: “The man is perfectly honestly unaware that he committed the offence.” “What is to become of the man?” asked the Magistrate. “He is a menace. ’ ’
“The man needs medical attention,” said Mr Averill. “He is certainly not responsible for his actions.” “This is an unfortunate class of case,” commented the Magistrate. “To release him would throw too great a responsibility on his brother. This is prone to recur at different times.” After receiving a medical report from Mr Averill, the Magistrate committed accused to prison for six months on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. “He can obtain medical treatment for his'complaint,” he said.
