DOG NUISANCE

Eliminated for Time Being

“Through the good work of Mr. Hogan, the dog nuisance has been practically eliminated for the time being,” commented the borough traffic inspector, Mr. A. C. Crawford, at the meeting ot the Hastings Borough Council last night when reporting that the dogcatcher had now completed his second fortnight.

It will be remembered that the council decided to appoint a dog-catcher for a period of one month, but that the service was to be spread over a long period. The inspector reported that the catcher had caught a total of 129 dogs. Regarding the dogs impounded by the council’s officers, the Hastings branch of the New Zealand Tailwaggers’ Club wrote expressing appreciation of the manner in which the retiring ranger (Mr. J. Hall) looked after the stray dogs and assisted the club in its activities, and suggested that as Mr. Hall had the necessary accommodation and facilities the dog pound be left as it is at present.

The council decided to agree to the request in the meantime pending a decision in. the matter of the appointment of the new borough official, part of whose duties would be the matter of the dog pound.
