HASTINGS SURVEY
Official Explains Council Liability
AGREEMENT OF 1933 “A slightly wrong impression” is how an official of the Lands and Survey Department at Napier refers to an article dealing with the cost to the Hastings Borough Council for a standard survey of portion of the Hastings borough. Ho points out that thu council’s liability to pay £9Ol, tho cost of tho work involved, is in accordance with an agreement made between the council and the department in 1933, “Before the ’quako there existed a survey over about a quarter of tho Hastings borough area,” ho said. “It was found necessary to revise this survey owing to displacements brought about by the earthquake. “In 1933 the Borough Council was approached concerning the quusti'.a of extending the existing survey to cover the whole of the borough, the council’s contribution to bo two-fifths of the actual cost, estimated at £2340. The council gave its consent to tho proposal, but asked for payment to be spread over a period, and the department agreed to the payment by annual instalments of £125. “The survey is now completed, and the actual cost to the Hastings Borough Council worked out to be £35 less than the estimated cost. From these statements it will be noted that this expenditure is not payment for earthquake damage, but for entirely new work, and is in strict accordance with arrangements entered into with the council in 1933.”
