EVENING OF MUSIC

Napier Musicians’ Society Concert Last evening in Napier, the first general meeting of the 1930 season of the Musicians’ Society was held. The lounge, and tea rooms were comfortably heated and the stage, was decorated with a huge bowl of berried foliage, also one of autumn sprays and green hydrangea. 'There was a very large attendance, over which Mr P. W. Tombs presided. There are over twenty new members already this season, the membership now being well over TOO. Professional, associate and student members are welcome in the society and it is to the advantage of all musicians to enrol. The meeting took the form of a social evening with a musical programme, members and friends enjoying social chat between items. Prior to the first item, Mr Tombs said it gave him very great pleasure as president of the society to welcome all present at the opening evening, particularly the many new members. Mr Tombs said he valued tho society very much and trusted that the season would be as happy as that of last year. He paid a tribute to the music teachers of Napier, saying they were a happy band, and ho trusted that this comradeship would always continue. (Bach), “Meditation” (Massenet), Mr Cecil Fitzwater. Recital, “Episodes from the Life of Napoleon,” “Roads in the Wood”, Mr T. H. Ringland. Vocal, “Softly Awakes my Heart”, iSaiut-Saeus), “Still as the Night” (C. Bohm), Miss Myrtle Chote. Vocal, “The Lute Player (Allidsen), Mr A. P. Cutcliffe. Instrumental, Op. No. 2 (1) “Allegro”, (2) Andantino” (Rheinberger), Messrs F. Hunt (violin), M. Saxby (cello), and D. Lawson (piano). The accompanists were: Mrs L. J. Prime, Miss W. McCarthy and Mr P. W. Tombs, At the conclusion coffee and sandwiches were served. A social time followed and the singing of the National Anthem concluded a very interesting and enjoyable evening which augurs well for the rest of the season. Among those present were: Mr P. W.
