SCHOOL SWIMMING

Handing Shield to Mahora THE 1935 COMPETITION Tile competition for the Harding Shield among the Hastings primary schools has been decided by the Education. Board, the winning school being .Mahora, with a percentage of 33.78. Mr Harding gave this beautiful shield lor competition, not to improve school swimming, but with the definite object of tieaching boys and girls to swim, and the school showing the beet percentage of pupils who can swim at least 25 yards becomes the holder of this ooveted trophy. Tho shield has undoubtedly had an ■effect on learners, and, though the winners’ percentage seems to be low, at must be remembered that the total roll has to be computed. Mahora results tor 1935 ire given, the 1934 results being in parenthesis,:—

Those pupils who can swim (over the whole 5ch001).—50.5 per cent. (44.9 per cent).

Elementary (the preparatory classesi).—6s.6 per cent. (56.1 per cent.).

For the Shield Swimming 25 yards or more, 33.78 per cent. 26.4 per cent.).
