From Our Own Correspondent ONGAONGA, June 24,

A public meeting in connection with the presentation of the balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 1935, and the election of a committee for th® Ongaonga War Memorial, was held in the hall last week.

It is to be hoped that the interest of settlers in this district in the memorial is not indicated by the attendance at the meeting. Present: Members, H. J. Robb, W. C. Freemantle, B. Diamond, E. Freemantle. A letter of apology for non-attendance was received from Mr G. Fletcher.

Mr Robb was elected chairman. The balance-sheet was read and adopted. Those present w-ere elected a committee with power to add to their number. Names were submitted for addition to the committee. The secretary, Mr E. Macfarlane, expressed his thanks to Mesdames J. Coles and Kirk, and Messrs O. Rasmussen, G. Stansfield, R. Kirk, G. Coles, A. Inglis, and to those who had given subscriptions, and stated that he was sorry if he had forgotten to thank anyone who had helped. A discussion took place on the question of piping the water from the well to the grounds. The question of trying to induce settlers to become annual subscribers was brought before the meeting by the secretary, who pointed out that in the earlier history of the memorial the annual subscriptions for one year amounted to £l3 7/6, contributed by 65 subscribers. PLUNKET BALL RESULT. As a. result of the recent effort to raise funds for the Waipawa branch of the Plunket Society, the local committee are able to hand over the sum of £lO 3/6, which was a very gratifying result.
