DAIRY INDUSTRY

Unemployment Board’s Aid BUILDINGS AND PLANT The Unemployment Board has had under consideration the question of assisting in the further re-employment of tradesmen in the building and related trades. “An avenue which suggested itself to the board some time ago,” states the Minister, Mr 8. G. Smith, “was the stimulation of improvements in buildings and equipment in dairy factories, and on dairy farms, which also has been occupying the attention of the Executive Commission of Agriculture from the point of view of an improvement in the quality of our dairy produce.

“With the object of encouraging those engaged in the dairy industry to effect improvements to their plant and buildings, and w-ith a view to stimulating the re-employment of men in the building and related trades, and also in the engineering and metal working trades, in which latter groups there are over 1000 men out of work, the board has decided to make available subsidies on a graduated basis for such works as the construction of alterations to or improvements of dairy factory buildings and milking sheds, concrete yards, etc., on dairy farms, and the installation of new dairy plant water supply systems.

“The granting of subsidies is limited to work put in hand by December 31. It will be subject to New Zealandmanufactured articles and materials being used wherever practicable, the use of New Zealand pig iron, particularly, being insisted upon as far as possible. “Subsidies will not be granted for the maintenance of repair and existing plant or machinery. Applicants for the subsidy also must await notification of approval before commencing work.

‘‘For the purpose of administering the scheme the Department of Agriculture is co-operating by acting as technical adviser. It is making available the services of field officers of the Dairy Division for the purpose ot' reporting upon applications. ‘‘ln addition to the direct employment which will be created in the building and metal working trades as the result of these subsidies, further employment must accrue in transport and inuity other occupations, and the board is of opinion that the proposed subsidies will bo of considerable benefit during the slack winter season in providing employment at their trades for a considerable number of men.

“Full details of the scheme will be finalised at an early date, when application forms will be available.”
