ARTS AND CRAFTS

Napier Townswomen Meet

The monthly meeting of the Arts and Crafts Circle of the Napier Townswomen’s Guild was held in St. Paul’s school-room on Thursday, when a large number of members and visitors was present. Mrs Oliver was in the chair.

Miss Large demonstrated the reseating of cane chairs, and had on view various samples of her work. This was followed by an interesting talk on fag goting by Miss S. Smith. During the afternoon Mrs Oldham spoke of the modern labour-saving devices in use in the average home in America. All speakers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Christie had on display a wonderful collection of hand-embroidered linen and cotton goods brought from India and Burma. These were much admired. The best thrift article, a child's dress made from dyed flour bags, was made by Mrs Meßeath. Mrs Ferguson was first in the cookcry competition. Next month a prize is to be given for the best pair of men’s or boys’ socks. The appeal made for gifts of woollen articles to be distributed by the Plum ket Society met with a ready response. Members who have not already handed in their gifts will have an opportunity of doing so at the July meeting. Twenty-one new members were enrolled.

Before dispersing, the works of art on exhibition were greatly admired by the members of the circle, and the thrift article came in for special comment. The next monthly meeting will take the form of a social afternoon, when members of the Hastings circle will be the guests of the Napier members. PERSONAL Mrs. A. F. Hall, “The Vicarage,” Cobden street, Gisborne, is spending a holiday in Havelock North.

Mr. and Mrs. IT. E. Troutbeck, Korokipo, Napier, and Mrs. Troutb.eck’s sister, Mrs. Eric Knight, Dannevirke, are visiting Rotorua. * * * Mrs Biggar, of Gisborne, who has been the guest of Mrs C. Twist, Greenmeadows for the Napier Park races, returned home to-day.
