On the Lawn at Napier

DARK HUES IN FAVOUR

The second day’s racing of the winter meeting of the Napier Park Club was held on Saturday at Greenmeadows, when there was a large attendance, the majority being women. It was a raw, dull day, with rather damp conditions underfoot. For a very brief period the sun peeped out. With the dark-hued frocking and grey skies, it was truly a winter meeting. Many remained in the stand for warmth and it was fortunate there was little wind. The proceedings were livened up by the excellent selections rendered by the Napier Citizens’ Band between the races.

Brown was the favoured colour worn, and navy came next. Almost every other woman wore a fur coat. Gaily coloured scarves peeping out gave a bright touch of colour to them. Hats were relieved by mounts, feathers, bright ribbon cockades, wings, etc. Seen on the lawn were:—

Mrs J. E. Gleadow, wearing a brown musquash coat over her costume of striped brown cloth; the toque to tone was smartly finished with a brown and beige feather wing. Mrs C. O. Morse (Mayoress) wore a light blue frock under royal blue coat which had a deep musquash collar. The hat worn was of royal blue felt. Mrs P. Wall (Hatuma), extremely smart English model costume in black face cloth, the coat and pockets edged with a binding of silk military braid. On the lapel was pinned a white gardenia spray and her black felt hat was trimmed with ribbon and a crystal mount.

Mrs A. J. Anderson wore a brown felt hat and brown frock with coat of fancy weave check material. Mrs J. D. Todd (Otane), was in a smart brown striped tweed ensemble, worn with smart brown felt hat having red shaded feather trim.

Mrs Biggar (Gisborne), brown cloth ensemble, toque to match with orange feather mount.

Mrs P. Patullo, black ensemble, the matching felt hat relieved with a white feather.

Airs. J. Buchanan (Ongaonga) was very smart in a Russian tunic suit of navy richly braided anJ finished chromium clasps. Oriental pastel shaded silk fashioned the deep tunic blouse under it and a smart Cossack hat completed the enfemble. Mrs A. Symes (Hastings), wine cloth ensemble, the coat having a dark fur collar. The velour hat with feather trim matched the ensemble.

Mrs G. F. Gardiner, henna tailored ensemble, with velour hat to tone.

Mrs Leo Lopdell (Eskdale), berry red cloth frock worn with matching tweed hat.

Mrs Mathewson wort a navy hat and frock with brown fur coat.

Mrs R. H. Hunter wore a beige plaid tweed frock under a short brown musquash co-t, the hat to tone was of peach bloom velour.

Mrs F. N. Fussell wore a fawn ensemble with brown hat and fur coat. Nirs C. M. Tait (Maraekakaho), black frock and velour hat worn with black seal coat having hem, collar and cuffs of brown skunk fur.

Mrs Twigg, tailored tweed costume with brown felt hat and fur stole.

Mrs T. H. Lowry covered her navy frock with a brown musquash coat, her felt hat was navy in colour. Mrs R. Bettington (Sydney) looked very smart in a three piece ensemble in brown woven wool jersey. The close fitting hip length cape had deep armholes. The brown felt hat was sharply upturned in front and finished with gilt mount. Mrs F. Fryer (Hastings) wore a saxe blue hat and frock with brown fur coat. Mrs Miller (Greenmeadows), frock in navy blue with fawn felt hat and fur coat.

Mrs Solomon was smartly frocked in navy over which she wore a coat of brown musquash, the felt hat being brown to tone. Mrs C. Twist (Greenmeadows), tailored costume in black cloth flecked in white, worn with black felt hat and brown fur necklet. Mrs T. Fox wore a smart navy cloth ensemble with hat to tone. Mrs Blythe, tweed ensemble with hat to tone having touches of red and brown feather. Mrs Hector Smith (Ormlie), wine frock and felt hat worn with brown fur coat. Mrs Ballinger (Wellington), wore a black frock and smart velvet toque with coat of black eoney seal. Mrs L. M. Patullo, royal blue frock worn with navy felt hat and fur necklet. Mrs J. Parker, frock of black and white shepherd’s plaid tweed worn with black felt hat and fur trimmed ccfat. Mrs F. Sanderson, navy frock, black hat and short fur coat. Mrs John Mason, tailored tweed costume worn with short brown fur coat and brown felt hat. Mrs R. Stead (Hastings), smart l model costume in navy and white fancy I shaded stripe, navy hat and brown fur necklet. Williams, smart brown cloth ensemble, the coat richly fur trimmed, fawn felt hat. Mrs H. Cato (Westshore) wore a brown frock and black hat with her three-quarter coney fur coat. Mrs Eric Nelson (Mangateretere), navy cloth ensemble, with felt hat to tone. Mrs J. Lowry (Oreka), navy tailored costume and felt hat, lovely beige fox aeeklet. i Mrs T. M. Geddis wore a a*ry atrik--1 in£ model frocX ia soft bladt cloth, the

close fitting bodice finished with accordion pleated upstanding collar and silvery grey cord crossed the bodice in military style. The black felt hat was upturned at back and a white feather inset; a short fur coat was also worn. Mrs F. C. Williams, navy cloth ensemble with hat to tone.

Mrs E. North, brown marocain frock and brown felt hat worn with brown musquash coat.

Mrs R. I. Sutton covered her frock with a close fitting coat of nigger brown astraehan, the becoming toque was of velvet to tone.

Mrs A. K. Collins, frock in green and white check tweed worn with smart bottle green coat and felt hat.

Mrs M. Graham, black and white figured marocain frock, black seal coat and cloth toque.

Miss L. Limbrick wore a brown fur trimmed tweed coat over her frock and with hat of navy velour. Mrs La Roche, navy frock and felt hat worn with saxe blue cloth coat.

Mrs L. Clarke, Empire blue costume with felt hat to tone.

Mrs IL Bishop (Hastings), beige frock, cloth coat in deeper tone and hat to match.

Mrs Weber, navy cloth ensemble with velour hat to tone.

Mrs W. Neilson (Haumoana) brown and fawn plaid tweed ensemble worn with smart brown beret.

Mrs Rowan wore a navy hat and frock with musquash coat. Mrs F. N. Harvey, saxe blue crepe frock, hat in deeper tone and brown fur coat.

Mrs Tony White (Hastings), smart ensemble in nut brown, felt hat to
