STRONG MEMBERSHIP

Life Blood of A. & P. Society SATISFACTORY REVIVAL Reference to the satisfactory manner in which the membership of the Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society has revived since the 1931 earthquake, to such an extent, indeed, that the present position is better than it has been at any time during tho past 10 years, with the one exception of tho Royal Show year, 1931, was made by the acting-chairman, the Hon. H. A. Russell, at the annual general meeting held in Napier this morning. Mr Russell quoted the following figures to show the annual membership subscriptions during the past 10 years:— £ 1920 1789 1927 1825 1928 1908 1920 1971 1930 1974 1931 2160 1932 1941 1933 1815 1931 1841 1935 1988 “We have had a most successful year,” went on Mr Russell. “The Spring Show was a very great success. We are still going ahead, and so long as we continue to do so we will improve our show and make it more popular. “The Autumn Show was also a great success. Although our balance-sheet shows that we made a loss on that chow, I don’t agree with that, because most of the people at the show were members. It shows that our member* are really keen supporters. It is such keenness among our members that wo chiefly want.” Mr Russell also made reference to the success of the ram fair, from which • quite a lot of income was derived. “Membership of the society is our life blood,” Mr Russell concluded. “This year wo had 1988 paying members. What wo want to do now is to pass the 2000 mark.” In tho course of the meeting 30 new members were elected, bringing tho total membership of tho society up to 2018. The new members are the following: Mesdames J. W. Harding, Duncan Holden, C. O. Nestor Bayliss, Miss M. Maclean and Messrs D. M. Georgetti, D. Condon, W. Chapman, E. V. Howard, A. Golding, Dr. W. A.
