A GREAT MOMENT
H.B, Loyalty to Playwright Tire thrill of achievement was the experience of Miss M. Hodge, aunt of Dr. Merton Hodge, the clever New Zealand writer of “The Wind and the Rain,” which was so successfully performed at the Hastings Municipal Theatre last week. Mrs. G. D. McAUey, with whom Miss Hodge was staying at the time, having come especially from Gisborne to see the play, expressed to a “Tribune” reporter to-day at least some of the appreciation that her guest felt for the loyalty which was shown by so many Hawke’s Bay friends of herself and her nephew who had attended and so fully appreciated the performances of the players and the excellence ot the play itself. It was a great moment in the life of Miss Hodge to see and hear the acclamation which was given by the audience at the conclusion of the performance, and still more did she appreciate the tribute paid by Mr. Thirlwell when he said that to be playing Merton Hodge in Hawke's Bay was like playing Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon. Another fine moment, however, awaited Miss Hodge, for, after the audience had dispersed, there was a small gathering at which Mr. Thirlwell presented to Miss Hodge a bouquet which had been prepared m her honour by the former pupils of Woodford House, of which she at one time was principal. Miss Hodge is now the guest of .Miss Ernest Groonie, Te Onepu, and on Thursday leaves for Wellington again to see "The Wind and the Hain,” and renew her acquaintance with Mr Thirlwell
