THEFT OF MONE

Two Women Victimised MAN SENT TO GAOL A travelling showman named John Valvoi, alias John Lindsay, told two Walroa women he had a racehorse running at the Wairoa race meeting. They paid him £lO and £9, and he disappeared. He was arrested by Detective H. F. Codflington, who related the facts to Mr J. G. L. Hewitt S.M., in the Napier Police Court this morning, and Valvoi was given six months’ imprisonment for theft. There was a further charge from Invercargill that accused was idle and dis orderly, but this was withdrawn. Detective Coddington said that on January 24 the accused went to Wairoa and stayed at, the Arcadia boardinghouse. A man named Leslington and a woman named Ogren joined him, and he talked for some time about racehorses. The accused said he had a horse running on the second day, but would not disclose its name, he said, because people might invest on it and so reduce the dividend. He was introduced to a Mrs Olive Ogren and a Mrs Christina Kent. As a result of what he told them Airs Kent paid him £lO and Mrs Ogren £9 for investment on the horse Warvaue. He left them ostensibly to put the money on the horse, but that was the last the two women saw of him. The horse won. The detective said that accused was willing to restore the money. Accused, when he pleaded guilty, said that the two women gave him permission to back whatever horse he pleased. 11c did not have time to back a horse in the first race, so he backed one in the third. Neither of the women could afford to lose tho money. If given a chance he said he would return the money. The Magistrate: And if you don’t get a chance? I’m afraid your record is unsatisfactory. Three months on each charge, the terms to be cumulative.
