Mr. G. A. Maddison, Mayor, and Mr. A. I. Rainbow, deputy-Mayor, were both unavoidably absent from the monthly meeting of the Hastings Chamber oi Commerce last evening. Mr. t>. J. McKee apologised tor the absence ot these two member* Sergeant-Major E. Bezar of Wellington, late of the 57th (“Diehards’ i Regiment, yesterday celebrated hi 97th birthday. Ho received nutncroi congratulatory telegrams througlio. the day, including a personal tnessng from his Excellency the Govenmi General. Tho Hon. F. H. Tout, M.L.C.. a member of the principal board in Syd new of the A.M.P. Society, aecoi. panied by his sou and Mr. A. W. Sn< don, general manager of the socle arrived at Wellington yesterday in Sydney. They left for Hawkes Ji via the Wairarapa during the ait noon, and were present at the open of the society’s new building *t Nap this afternoon. They were accoinpaii by Sir Harold Beauchamp (chairman the local board of the society), Sir \\ liam Hunt (deputy chairman). I Alexander Roberts, Mr. N. S. Fid and Mr. W. T. Ikin, manager for \ Zealand.
