BRIGHT STORTFORD SALE
Big Entry of Fat Cattle
LATE VALUES MAINTAINED
With an entry of approximately 800 head, to-day’s stock sale at the Stortford Lodge yards saw the pen accomodation heavily taxed. Despite this heavy entry, however, values were well maintained at last week’s record levels, the bulk of the entry selling at prices which showed a very satisfactory return to vendors. Top price realised was £l2/10/- for bullocks, while cows •nd heifers frequently made in the vicinity of £8 and £9.
For the two sales previous to to-duy’s •ale the fat cattle entries hav e been relatively short, but, as the saying goes “when eggs are dear the hens will lay”, and the high prices which have ruled of late have encouraged stockowners to pick out any cattle which was sufficiently finished to be offered •s fats. In consequence the entry to day was heavy, although the quality was generally not so good as of late.
Strong outside buying competition was again a feature of to-day’s sale, buyers and agents being present from most of the outside districts of Wellington, Manawatu and the West Coast. Local butchers were also taking their usual interest in the bidding and some determined tussles between bidders were witnessed, the bids coming thick and fast.
For those who are interested in the individual realisations for the stock, a comprehensive selection of the entries and prices paid w ill he found on page 8.
