ENDEAVOUR TWO UP

AMERICA CUP RACE Triangular Course Record RAINBOW 51 SECS. BEHIND. (By I’.lrgraph-Press Sssn.-Copyright.) (Received 19, 11.30 a.m.) NEWPORT, Sept. 18. Mr T. M. Sopwith’s Endeavour won the second of the series of •even races for the America Cup, beating Mr Harold Vanderbilt’s Rainbow by 51 seconds, after leading at all marks. The Endeavour’s time was 3hrs. 9mins. isec., and is a record for the triangular course.

Although the Endeavour won by a •mailer margin to-day, 51 seconds, her victory was even more impressive than yesterday’s. She set a new Cup record for the 30-mile triangular course, and overcame the handicap of a torn sail •nd slow start, in which the Rainbow Crossed' the lino ahead, but was unable to maintain the lead. The British yacht was ahead at each leg by 15 seconds.

The first leg was sailed iu a breeze freshening from nine knots at the •tart. In the second leg Mr Vanderbilt managed to cut down the lead on the 10-mile run home, but his craft was not fast enough to overhaul his opponent.

The Endeavour hnd all the hard luck. Aside from a torn jib and late start •he lost control of her reaching jib as •he rounded the first mark, and once more lost precious seconds at the 20mile mark, sheeting in the jib again. The race during its middle course was sailed in a 14-knot breeze, but it

dropped down again to nine knots at tho finish.

Despite a torn sail, the rent in which grow more noticeable as the race progressed, Mr Sopwith apparently gambled on the canvas holding out for the duration of the contest. Another rent •oon appeared, but Mr Sopwith held on, only sending up the quadrilateral jib in stops, ready to break it out if the other gave way entirely.

REJOICING AT GOSPORT

(British Official Wireless.)* (Received 19, 1.15 p.m.) RUGBY. Sept. 18

The general opinion is that the Endeavour has a slight advantage in fresh breezes and the Rainbow in lighter winds. The success of the Endeavour was greeted with great rejoicing by the workmen who built her at Gosport.
