BOXING

Taylor Outpoints Dal Costa BRILLIANT EXHIBITION By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, August 20. One of the most brilliant exhibitions of boxing seen in Auckland over a long period of years was witnessed at the Town Hall, when Prank Taylor, of Auckland, undefeated professional bantamweight champion of New Zealand, gained a points decision over Dal Costa, bantamweight champion of New South Wales. Scenes of remarkable enthusiasm followed the announcement of the judges’ decision, a number of drivers of the taxi-cab company by which Taylor is employed rushing into the ring and carrying their hero shoulder-high to his dressing-room. Taylor well merited his wonderful reception. It is nearly four years since ha last fought, and to be pitted against a man of Costa’s reputation and ability was asking him a vety serious question in his effort to stage a comeback. However, the Aucklander rose to the occasion magnificently, concentrating principally upon a strong right-handed attack to'the Australian’s body. Taylor won every round up to the ninth with the exception of the second, having done practically all the attacking throughout. Costa shook his opponent badly with a hard right to the solar plexus in the ninth rdund, and this obviously made Taylor groggy in the legs. Apparently realising that his only chance of success lay in a knock-out, the Australian went right after his man. in the tenth round he sent Taylor down with a right to the jaw, the Auckland man rising on the count of eight. He weathered the attack amid a storm of cheering from all parts of the house, and gained a very popular decision on points. SEEKING BAY TITLES To-morrow’g Great Programme Truly a wonderful night’s programme is in store for boxing enthusiasts at the Hastings Drill Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) evening when tho Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association will stage the official Hawke’s Bay provincial amateur boxing championships. Excellent entries came to hand, the quality being of the best and jt is obvious that many great bouts will be provided, for the cream of the province will be on view. Altogether there will be nearly 20 bouts, all of which, except in the flyweight division, will be of three rounds of three minutes duration each. Bouts of this description call for the best that is in a boxer and this is the standard duration of bouts for the New Zealand titles. To-morrow’s bouts really are in the nature of a preliminary to the forthcoming New Zealand championship tournament which takes place a month hence as it is the intention of the Hawke’s Bay and also of the Napier Boxing associations to nominate its representatives for the national fixture on the merit of the performances in to-morrow night's fights. It is the anticipation of both associations to nominate two full teems so that it is only to be expected that the amateurs will go full out to find places in the teams that will figure in the big event of the year. The draw is as follows: — FLYWEIGHT J. Plowman v L. Abbott. B. Boylo, a bye. BANTAMWEIGHT ,1. O’Reilly v B. McKay. L. Robertson v. L. McLachlan. FEATHERWEIGHT. O. Stock v Nicholson.
