ATTITUDE TO AUSTRIA
British Views Stated CIRCUMSTANCES OF NOTE (British Official Wireless.) (Received 22, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 21. Sir John Simon, replying in the House of Commons to a question, outlined the circumstances m which the joint British, French and Italian announcement was made regarding th'; attitude towards Austria. He said that the policy of the British Government regarding the independence of Ausu-ia wag clearly stated in the aide memoire handed to the Austrian Minister. On the following day rhe French Ambassador suggested that the French and Italian Governments should join the British in making a decUcat.on on the same lines, i.nd Sir John Simon sub sequently informed those Go,e»nments that the British Government; was disposed to join in any statement substantially the same os the our. he had himself made. This joint statement was one of general principles and was specifically limited by the words ‘in accordance with relevant treaties.” Replying to a further question regarding the Government's attitude towards the appeal which Austria had announced her intentinn of making to the League, Sir John Simon said he would refrain from making a pronouncement in advance on the subject of the dispute to which the appeal related.
