WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

HALMOANA APRIL MEETING. There was a large attendance of members at the April meeting of the Haumoana Women’s Institute, which was held on Thursday afternoon. After opening with the Institute song, Mrs Glenny, vice-president, read the Women ’s Institute creed and welcomed one new member, Mrs Sutton. Mesdames Cockerill and Neilson were appointed delegates to represent Haumoana at the Northern Hawke’s Bay Federation meeting to be held in the Foresters' Hall, Napier, on April 26. Mrs Neilson then spoke on Red Cross work, the idea being to organise entertainments, etc., to raise money to purchase necessary garments. At the same time everyone is busy knitting peggy squares for bed coverings. Mrs Turner Williams, of Havelock North, gave a most interesting talk on her experiences while in Ceylon, the pictures and curios which were passed round, together with the baskets, mats, and native garments, etc., making it all very real, especially when two of the members consented to act as mannequins. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Turner Williams. Afternoon tea was prepared by Mesdames Butcher, Bye, Bridgman, Bowen, Misses Bridgman, Bowen, and Bye, members helping themselves and their neighbours, creating a more friendly spirit. The cake and biscuit competition was then judged, Miss Hibbell getting first and Mrs Agnew second for largo fruit cake, Mrs Agnew first and Miss Sutton second for Madeira cake; sponge, Miss Willis first, Mrs Bye second; biscuits, Miss Goodrick first, Miss Bridgman second, Miss Monteith third. A vote of thanks was accorded the judge, Miss May Miller. At the next meeting there is to be a competition, “Old Photographs,” a demonstration of wool-filled quilts and rugs from fleece wool, also the feathers for Red Cross purposes. The afterneon ended with the National Anthem. ELSTHORPE GROUP. On Wednesday night Elsthorpe was en fete when the members of the Institute entertained their husbands and friends at their third birthday party. The hall was turned into a drawingroom and was beautifully decorated with autumn flowers. ' The young members of the institute 'undertook the concert programme, the items being as follow: —Song, Mrs. Tiffen; recitation, Mrs. 11. McAulay; song and chorus, Mesdames H. McAulay, Orbell, Haycock, Misses Williams. Dillon, Sutherland Stephenson, Tiffen, Lizette (2), Smith, McGafhn and Beaehem. Two one-act plays entitled "Mrs. Addis" and “Just Like a

Woman” brought forth much applause In the latter Mrs. 11. McAulay ami Miss Ryan displayed splendid talent. Ip a few well chosen words the president, Mrs. C. N. B. Williams, welcomed the guests and presented thr competition prizes for the year—Mrs W. Watson (junr.) being first, Miss A Moore second and Mrs. Boese (jur. third. A competition for bottled fruit am apples and pears, judged by the men resulted as followsßottled fruit, Mr, Sutherland!, Mrs. Alex Williams, Mrs Titfen and Miss M. Williams (equal) 2 Apples: Mrs. Boese (senr.) 1, Mrs Dillon and Mrs. Beachen (tie) 2 Pears: Miss J. McGaffin 1, Misi Stephenson 2. Sweets: Mrs. Tiffen 1 Miss Williams 2, Dlrs. M. McGaffin 3 Bowl of flowers: Mrs. Alex William, 1 and 2, Mrs. Gilmore 3. Mrs. Render dine kindly judged the sweets am flowers. Jumbled towns formed a competitio: for the mon, ten being equal for firs' place. Musical parcels was won by Mr Edwards. A birthday cake made and beautiful!' iced by Mrs. Ryan, and holding threi candles was cut and distributed t< everyone. After a very bountiful supper wa handed round the hall was cleared fo: dancing, the music being supplied b; Mrs. Marsh, Miss Nelson and Mr Orhell, The National Anthem brought a ver, enjoyable evening to a close. TIKOKINO MEETING. The sixth birthday of the Tikokin Women’s Institute was held recently ii the Oddfellows’ Hall. Mrs. O’Rourk presided in the absence of the pre sident, Mrs. Eddy, who was unable t be present through illness. The day was beautifully fine an, many visitors were present from Wai pawa, Waipukurau and Ongaonga Birthday greetings were received fror institutes unable to be represented an, also from Mrs. R. H. Tod. federation president. The hall was decorated with beautifu flowers by members of the institute. During the afternoon the Tikokin members staged the one-act play “B< tween ‘the Soup and the Savoury Songs were rendered bv Mrs. Yardlej of Ongaonga and recitations were give ’’as.
