CHARGE OF ASSAULT AND ROBBERY

TWO ACCUSED ARRESTED AT OPOTIKI. POLICE SET TRAP ON ROAD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Cisborne, March 17. The Gisborne police have been advised of the arrest of two men at Opotiki allegedly in the possession of a car stolen at Wellington on March 10 on a charge of assault and robbery at Tokomaru Bay. The accused, Alfred Norman O’Meara, aged 35, and Wilkin Rainsbone Avery, aged 24, appeared before a J ustice of the Peace and were remanded to Gisborne, the police stating that the men were also wanted on charges of theft at Gisborne, Napier and Wellington. Following a series of offences between Wellington and Gisborne, the police were on the look-out for the missing car and when it was reported to be proceeding towards Opotiki a trap was set on the road, which was blocked by the expedient of drawing a horse and dray across the approach to a bridge. The two occupants of the car were immediately apprehended by waiting constables and a search of the car disclosed a fully-loaded revolver and a large variety of articles and provisions.
