CHRISTCHURCH FATAL FIRE

VERDICT AT INQUEST

Christchurch, March 10

At the inquest held this afternoon into the death of Mrs H. J. Gresson, the coroner, Mr H. P. Lawry, returned the following verdict: “Death was due to burns originating from petrol. While she had previously shown suicidal tendencies there is no evidence available as to how the fire occurred beyond the fact that she was still showing signa of depression.”

Dr. C. Hamilton Gould, brother of Mrs Gresson, gave evidence that Mrs Gresson’s health had not been good. She had been receiving treatment. He saw her on Tuesday evening, when she seemed well. Constable McLeod gave evidence that the fire started in the wash-house, where there was a distinct smell of petrol
