COUNTER-ATTACK

CHINESE CLAIM SUCCESS

SERIOUS FIGHTING

JAPAN WANTS WITHDRAWAL

Shanghai, Mar. 10

Chinese reports state that China is making desperate efforts to recapture Chengteah, there being serious fighting throughout the night of Maroli 8. The

Chinese claim that they drove back the Japanese for a considerable distance, losing 200 men in the process. The attacks are being made by night in order to nullify aeroplanes.

The Chinese are sending considerable reinforcements to the vicinity of Kupeikow Pass, and are preparing to hold the position until the launching of an offensive under General Chiang Kaishek.

The Japanese Legation at Peking is attempting to negotiate for the withdrawal of the Chinese forces in order to prevent further bloodshed and the extension of hostilities in North China. Otherwise the Japanese will be compelled to send troops through Shanhaikuan to attack the Chinese in the rear. The Japanese announce that operations will cease when the occupation of Kupeikow is completed.
