GOLF TITLE
LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY MRS TEMPLER. FINAL WITH MISS RUTHERFORD Timaru, Oct. 13. Mrs J. C. Templer, who, as Miss Bonnie Wright, held the Dominion ladies’ golf title in 1919-1920, has again risen to the position of lady champion as a result of defeating Miss B. Rutherford (Hawarden) 8 up and 7. On her play throughout the tournament Mrs Templer thoroughly deserved her victory. She had shown a remarkably consistent standard, and with the final only half completed Mis s Rutherford did not appear to have a chance of winning. The result was a clear indication of the merits of the two finalists on the day. The winner played an almost perfect short game, invariably advancing to the greens with unerring accuracy. An indication of this may be had from the fact that on a number of greens she required only one putt. Occasionally a misdirected shot found the bunker, but Mrs Templer got out of trouble in a masterly manner.
Mrs Templer completed the first nine holes in the morning in 38, Miss Rutherford taking 42. At this stage Mrs Templer was 4 up, Miss Rutherford so far having failed to win a hole. At the completion of the first 18 holes Mrs Templer was four up, this proving a big handicap to Miss Rutherford, who failed in the afternoon. Showing an Improvement on her form earlier in the day, she managed to secure five holes but had only one win. Mrs Templer won five out of eleven holes in the afternoon, the match finishing at the 29th. Mrs Templer made a bad start in the morning and Miss Rutherford should have taken the first hole, but faulty putting enabled her opponent to halve in one over bogey. The next also was halved, Mrs Templer taking the third, a 400 yards hole, in birdie four. Two halves followed, but Mrs Templer had now settled down to her game and took three holes in succession, the last of which was in birdie three. She was 4 up at the turn. Another two wins followed, Miss Rutherford gaining her first hole at the 12th. She then staged a recovery, winning three out of four holes and leaving Mrs Templer 4 up at the completion of the round. The first three holes in the afternoon were halved, but Mrs Ternpler took the next two, making her six up. A win in bogey three nt the 24th for Miss Rutherford reduced the margin, but Mrs Templer won three more, leaving her 8 up and 7.
